cutting ceremony. >>> more now on the downfall of the now former cia director david petraeus. u.s. government official is telling cnn the affair that caused petraeus' stepdown was first revealed through an fbi investigation. suzanne kelly has more now. suzanne? >> we now know from a u.s. official it was a complaint that paula broadwell, the woman who wrote the biography of general peatry was was sending harassing e-mails to another woman that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. that second woman hasn't been identified and the official we spoke with didn't know the nature of that woman's relationship with the former director. but more details are coming out about the time line of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. senior u.s. intelligence official tells cnn the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, james clapper, about the investigation on tuesday night, election night, just as
would test him. he was going to test me. it ended up being a test for both of us since we both ran pretty quickly. that was the foundation of our relationship. >> reporter: broadwell got to know petraeus' wife holly, both in the front row just seats away from each other during his cia confirmation hearing. officials say broadwell had classified material on her computer, which is illegal. but the fbi does not currently believe that any of it came from petraeus. and so far, no charges have been filed against her. she has gone into hiding with her husband and sons, age 4 and 6. for his part, petraeus has reached out to old friends, who say he is devastated. >> what's the first thing he said? >> he apologized. he said that he felt he let the team down. and that he obviously wanted to, to make it, to pull his family together and to try to recover from this. >> reporter: a long way from 2007, in iraq when he talked about the burdens of being the man then considered the nation's most trusted general. >> the job is so consuming, it is something that takes every waking minute of every day.

greevey will be our guest, georgia congresswoman tom price and florida congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz joins us. it's tuesday, november 13th, "starting point" begins right now. >>> morning, welcome, everybody. our "starting point" this morning. breaking news. another top military general has now been linked to the sex scandal that forced out cia director david petraeus. forced him to resign. general john allen, the commander of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan is now under investigation for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. now investigators are said to be looking into the 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other documents that he sent to her. kelley, of course, is the florida woman whose original complaint to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petra
